Olvera Street & El Pueblo de Los Angeles - SOLD OUT

Guests will start off the excursion with a one-hour docent guided tour of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, home to the Pico House, Olvera Street, the Avila Adobe, and other fascinating remnants of LA's past.  Guests will then enjoy a few hours on their own to have a bite to eat at one of the local eateries, explore the nearby Italian American Museum, Chinese American Museum, or one of the many other local historical sites, or head across the street to admire the unique architecture of Union Station.  On the day of the excursion, staff escort will provide a map and list of attractions within walking distance.

Rubel Castle & Glendora Village

Attendees will begin with a 90-minute docent-guided tour of Rubel Castle, then take a quick bus ride over to Glendora Village to for some time on their own to grab a bite to eat, peruse the boutiques, and visit the eclectic collection of 19th century items at the Glendora Historical Society Museum. Please note that the tour requires a walking and standing ability of at least 90 minutes. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are recommended for gravel and uneven ground. Unfortunately, Rubel Castle does not allow for tour participation via wheelchairs or walkers due to stairs, tunnels, and uneven surfaces.

Spend some time exploring the antique shops and quaint cafes of Old Towne Orange followed by a 4:00pm matinee at the brand new Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University. Combining the big-band swing of the 1930s and ‘40s with contemporary music such as funk and jazz fusion, the Big Phat Band, led by pianist/saxophonist/arranger Gordon Goodwin, is a national phenomenon, a “winning combination of impeccable musicianship and pop savvy” (JazzTimes). This performance is guaranteed to be unlike any you’ve seen before!

San Juan Capistrano by Train San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano is a California landmark and cultural icon that was founded on November 1, 1776. First, attendees will take a short bus trip to Anaheim Regional Transportation Center where they will board the train and enjoy a 40 minute train ride to San Juan Capistrano. This trip will include a one hour docent-guided tour of Mission San Juan Capistrano with special focus on the details of California’s early history and the birthplace of Orange County. Following the tour, attendees will have the opportunity to continue to explore the mission, enjoy lunch on their own at one of the many local restaurants, peruse over 10,000 square feet of antiques at the Old Barn Antique Mall, or visit the O’Neill Museum, a four room house built in the 1870s. Guests will then take the coach bus from San Juan Capistrano back to Signal Hill.

Attendees will enjoy lunch in an elegant setting followed by a musical matinee performed by a professional cast. Inspired by a real event and featuring a Grammy-nominated score, Broadway’s Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and 40s. Propelled by an ensemble of onstage musicians and dancers, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion, beautiful melodies and powerfully moving performances. Please note that ticket price includes meal, waiter gratuity, and show. Desserts and beverages can be purchased at the venue for an additional cost.

Excursion Information

Reservations: Trips must be paid by check or cash at the time of reservation. Checks should be made payable to City of Signal Hill. To pay, either come in person or mail check to the Community Services Department, 2175 Cherry Avenue, Signal Hill, CA 90755.

Waitlist: Trips that fill up will have a waitlist available. All residents will be called from the waitlist before non-residents. After residents have been contacted we will go down the waitlist in numerical order starting with number one. Do not send a check or pay for the excursion unless you are contacted by Community Services staff and told a spot is available for you.

Parking: Parking for excursions is available in the lot next to the Library, in front of the basketball courts, on the south side of Hill Street, and in the upper parking lot on Legion Drive.

Departure: For all excursions, please arrive at the Signal Hill Library, 1770 E. Hill Street, 30 minutes prior to departure time.

Motorcoach Special Requests: Our excursions’ seating is based on a priority system, residents first, any person with a handicap and then non-residents, and are based on when payment is received. We do our best to accommodate special requests, but they are not guaranteed.

Excursion Cancellation Policy: To receive a refund on any excursion you must contact the Community Services Department at least ten business days prior to the excursion. An administrative fee of $5 will be charged on ALL cancellations. If cancellation is made within ten business days, no refunds or credits are issued.

Illness on Trips: If you are feeling ill please notify the escort immediately. Please do not leave the group without notifying the escort as to where you are going. Also, a travelling kit is an essential, though what you choose to put in it may depend slightly on your own individual needs.

Here are some items that you may want to consider taking on the next trip:
Prescription medications, anti-diarrheal medicine, allergy pills, and pain relievers
Refreshments: cereal bars, crackers, fruit, water or juice drink

Please be advised that City staff cannot dispense any medications.
