NEW! Workforce Training

The California State Library is providing the Signal Hill Public library with these online learning platforms for career enhancement, job skills training, technology basics, and life-long learning. Learn for free from Coursera, GetSetUp, LearningExpress Library, Northstar Digital Literacy, LinkedIn Learning, Skillshare, and BrainFuse HelpNow.

To aid in the recovery from the pandemic, these programs have been made available to all public libraries in California via the California State Library. This project is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the American Rescue Plan Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

California State Library

Coursera

Coursera provides learners with access to more than 5,000 courses and certifications with subtitles in over 50 languages. Offers courses that include: English for Business and Entrepreneurship (ESL), Foundations of Public Health Practice, Become an EMT, Bookkeeping Basics, Introduction to Google Docs, Branding: The Creative Journey. Includes “Gateway Certification,” a program for people without a college degree and with no experience in the field, and designed to prepare an individual for an entry-level, in-demand career in order to provide them with an onramp to economic opportunity.

GetSetUp

GetSetUp is a a social learning platform for individuals ages 50+ and taught by peers. During the week, GetSetUp offers more than 40 live classes every day as well as 25 on weekends.  GetSetUp offers classes for older adults just learning technology, as well as classes covering physical health, mental health, social health, and vocational health.   

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning's online courses are taught by expert instructors and cover the latest software, creative, and business topics. New courses are added each week to help users learn the most relevant professional skills. Get access to over 16,000 courses in 7 different languages–English, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Northstar Digital Literacy

Northstar focuses on those with no, low, or limited technology skills, provides assessments of 14 different digital skills, and offers online, self-guided modules to assess the ability of individuals to perform tasks based on these skills. Included are basic computer digital literacy standards and modules in three main areas: 

  • Essential Computer Skills - Basic Computer Skills, Internet Basics, Using Email, Windows OS, Mac OS.
  • Essential Software Skills – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Docs.
  • Using Technology in Daily Life - Social Media, Information Literacy, Career Search Skills, Supporting K-12 Distance Learning, Your Digital Footprint.
