Sustainable City Committee Award Program

The City of Signal Hill provides various award opportunities to residents and businesses for their continued sustainable efforts. To nominate a resident or business for any of the following awards, please email the Community Development Department at commdev@cityofsignalhill.org

Kicken' Grass Award

The City recognizes businesses and residents who have obtained the necessary permits and successfully installed drought-tolerant landscaping. This award celebrates efforts to conserve water through the use of native plants, succulents, mulch, and other sustainable landscaping practices that reduce water consumption and promote environmental health. Celebrate your commitment to water conservation and sustainable practices by participating in this commendable initiative and join us in creating a greener, more resilient community. 

KICKIN GRASS AWARD

Kicken' Gas Award

The City recognizes businesses and residents who have taken significant steps to promote sustainable transportation by installing EV chargers. This award celebrates efforts to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and support the growing community of electric vehicle users. To qualify, participants must obtain the necessary permits for EV charger installations, ensuring safety and compliance with local regulations. By installing EV chargers, you contribute to a cleaner, greener future and demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship. Join us in our mission to reduce carbon footprints and foster a sustainable community.

KICKIN GAS AWARD

Sunshine Award 

The City recognizes businesses and residents who have taken significant steps to promote renewable energy by installing photovoltaic (PV) solar systems. This award celebrates efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease reliance on non-renewable energy sources, and support the transition to sustainable energy. To qualify, participants must obtain the necessary permits for PV solar system installations, ensuring safety and compliance with local regulations.


SUNSHINE AWARD

Sustainability Award 

The Sustainable City Committee’s Sustainability Award recognizes those who employ sustainable practices and have a positive environmental mentality. Past award recipients have been recognized for accomplishments such as:

  • Landscaping/irrigation upgrades, lighting upgrades, eliminating redundant lighting;
  • Reducing the amount of waste the school site produces annually by recycling, composting and donating uneaten food;
  • Offering green products, recycling practices, reusable bags for online order delivery and energy efficiency; 
  • Reducing to almost zero waste and participating in cardboards, waste and food recycling programs; and
  • Using state-of-the-art construction methods and energy saving materials that meet or exceed all current building codes.

The Sustainability Award is nominated and voted on by the SCC Committee and presented by the City Council. The award is for larger more comprehensive sustainable practices, operations, energy efficient renovations, or large commercial solar installations.

Ground Education 

On March 25, 2025 the City Council presented a Sustainability Award to Ground Education a locally based group offering a school garden learning program. The program focuses on encouraging kids to explore the important connection between healthy food, a vibrant community, and environmental responsibility by bringing nature to schools.


The Heights on Signal Hill

On October 22, 2024, the City Council presented a Sustainability Award to The Heights at Signal Hill for their common area remodel. The project included removing a water-and-energy consuming swimming pool and replaced it with a BBQ area, patio, and drought tolerant landscaping with a stormwater capture feature.


Promontory West Bluff HOA 

On February 21, 2024, the City Council presented a Sustainability Award to the Promontory West Bluff HOA for their continued promotion of solar panels within the HOA. The Sustainable city Committee nominated and selected the HOA for the award.


EDCO 

On July 11, 2023, the City Council awarded a Sustainability Award to EDCO for the new baling system installed at their facility.
