On July 12, 2016, Mayor Lori Woods presented the Sustainability Award in the category of Water Efficient Landscapes to Mark McGuire, the property owner of the commercial building at 1140 E. Willow Street. The Sustainable City Committee nominated and selected this property for the award. Mr. McGuire recently replaced the parking lot turf with mulch and colorful, drought tolerant plants. This property is also selected for a Beautification Award by the Planning Commission for renovating the building with new glass windows and doors, new metal awnings, and new paint color for the exterior walls.
On February 23, 2016, Mayor Larry Forester presented the Sustainability Award in the category of Water Efficient Landscapes to the owner of 1843 Junipero Avenue. Daritza Gonzalez accepted the award on behalf of her father, Manuel Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez replaced turf with sand, decorative rocks, cactus and other drought tolerant plants to create a one-of-a-kind desert-like landscape. The plants are hand watered and Mr. Gonzalez says his water bill has been reduced by half since the replacement of turf.
